The Mid Atlantic Chapter will host the 2009 South Carolina Advocacy Day in Columbia on April 23, 2009. Advocacy Day is an opportunity for MS Activists to talk to their SC legislators about issues affecting people with MS and their families.
The day will begin with a breakfast with SC legislators and a short presentation. MS Activist Volunteers will be provided with talking points that outlined the Mid Atlantic Chapter’s SC legislative issues, and materials to leave behind. MS Activists will have a chance to visit their representative and come together for a working lunch to discuss the responsiveness of the SC legislators.
MS Activist training will be provided prior to the event.

Follow-up for the MS Study Committee
During the 2008 South Carolina legislative session, a bill (S.775) was passed that created the Multiple Sclerosis Healthcare Access Study Committee. The committee is comprised of four people with MS and professionals from Health & Human Service, neurologists, the Medical and Hospital Associations, the SC Nurses Association, and the NMSS Mid Atlantic Chapter.
Since that time, the MS Study Committee has met to discuss healthcare issues important to people with MS. The MS Study Committee will continue to research and discuss ways in which to increase access to healthcare for people with MS in South Carolina . The committee will provide a report to the SC General Assembly in January 2009.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT
Activism is a critical component of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s mission to end the devastating effects of MS. Many South Carolina public policies and programs influence the health and well-being of people with chronic diseases and illnesses in our state. The Mid Atlantic Chapter advocates for people with multiple sclerosis through a grassroots movement called the SC Action Alert Network.
The network is composed of people affected by MS who volunteer to receive email messages concerning state and federal legislative issues that effect people with MS and their families. This team of volunteer activists takes action by contacting their legislators by email, letter, telephone calls, or visits. These contacts go a long way toward increasing public awareness of multiple sclerosis. Your elected officials depend upon you for information and direction on how public policy affects peoples’ lives.
